Kegg Farms Wins the EMPI-Indian Express Innovation Awards 2006
Avitech`s sister organisation, Kegg Farms, which specializes in coloured chickens for backyard poultry (kuroiler) won the second annual Entrepreneurship & Management Processes International (EMPI) and Indian Express Innovation Awards 2006 Gold trophy, for developing genetically-bred high yielding village specific poultry birds able to withstand and thrive under harsh conditions in rural India. Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who gave away the first set of Innovation Awards last year, bequeathed the honours this year too at a grand ceremony held at the Taj Hotel, New Delhi in December 2007.
This award had been conferred on its Kegg Farms for the most innovative idea and business model, which has been able to benefit a large number of people at the grassroots. Kegg Farms was picked from more than 400 applications, which were put through a three-stage evaluation process. There were 20 organizations in the final short-list from which 14 winners were selected. Nine organisations were selected for the gold trophy. Five others were awarded the silver trophy. The selection panel was headed by eminent scientist MGK Menon, and included academicians, technologists, consultants and administrators.
Other winners of the Gold trophy included Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Water Supply and Sanitation-Maharashtra, Midas Communications, Genpact, Multi-Commodity Exchange if India and L.V.Prasad Eye Institute.
