Antibiotics in feed, commonly called antibiotic growth promoter (AGP), have been used as an effective tool to improve animal performance, by suppressing the pathogens in the digestive tract. Recently, usage of AGPs has come under increasing scrutiny by government regulators, scientists and consumers because of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

Acidosis in Dairy Cattle

In dairy cattle, rumen pH fluctuates considerably by 0.5 to 1 pH unit during the 24 hours’ period. Rumen pH is determined by the dynamic balance between the intake of fermentable carbohydrates, buffering capacity of the rumen, and rate of acid absorption from the rumen.
